Hyperthymestic syndrome is a blessing or curse?

 

Hyperthymesia is a rare condition that is found only in a small number of people. It is characterized by a state whereas a person has deep detailed memory or autobiographical memory. In short this condition can be described as super memory and also known as a highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM). According to the study, people with hyperthymestic syndrome can recall detailed information about themselves as well as their past personal experiences. These people have the ability to retain information as either short term or long term memories. People with HSAM are like normal people but different in terms of having sharp memories. These people never use mnemonic devices like us to recall long strings of information. We can say it's god-gifted whereas a person has such ability like they can recall each and every event related to their past and present life with extreme accuracy.

 

Some research explained that biological, genetic or psychological problems may be caused by hyperthymesia. Another cause of this condition is that the people have greater use of areas of the brain that are associated with memory.

 

There are some characteristics by which we may be able to determine such people. These people have semantic memory, ability to recall minor events, exceptional capacity of memorizing, exceptional episodic memory, high reasoning capacity etc.

HSAM does not keep any physical side effects or any kind of complications. But it can lead mentally exhaustion to absorb and restore so much information. This condition is a blessing and curse for the people who have hyperthymesia. For example, it is really a super natural memory whereas a person can recall detailed information. It’s really great and everyone wills for it. The drawback of this ability is like if people have bad experiences in their development stage or any stage of life then they cannot forget any incident which keeps them haunted and as a result they cannot start their life from the initial chapter. In this scenario, it is the curse for the people with HSAM.

  

According to research, around 60 people across the world have HSAM. Marilu Henner is a famous actress, who showed off her autobiographical minutiae on 60 minutes a few years ago.

There is a Korean web series ‘Remember’ which is completely based on the HSAM in which Yoo Seung has played a character as a hero who has HSAM. In this k-drama we can find how these people recall all the detailed information which is not possible for normal people.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO )  is a cardiopulmonary support machine. It is quite similar to the heart-lung by-pass machine that is used in open-heart surgery.
