Is split personality a disorder?
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
Hello everyone! Today I am going to describe about dissociative personality disorder. I think most people have heard about multiple personality disorder. We often use this word when we find someone doing things they wouldn’t normally do, for example reckless driving, speeding, stealing money from their friends and family.
A complex psychological condition that caused by several factors including trauma during his early childhood (i.e. repetitive physical, sexual or emotional abuse) which is known as dissociative identity disorder. In short, people with dissociative personality disorder poses two or more separate personalities. DID is also known as multiple personality disorder or split personality disorder. However, these identities control an individual’s behavior at different times which can cause gap in memory and other problems or can simplified in one word hallucination (believing something is real when it is not. It is shocking like each personality has its own traits, personal history, like and dislikes. Therefore it is called as complex psychological condition. I think so this kind personality we often see in movies. There is a latest example of one movie Ek Villain Returns wherein Ibrahim play a role as a split personality. For example initially we found the person is too decent and sober but whom one did he want to marry Disha, was the Villain who is making him to do the entire things. But at the end, truth came in light, we got to know Ibrahim was the person who did everything as he had split personality. Here, I gave example of movie to bring a clarity each of mind what is the DID. Though, there are wide number of movies which are based on DID.
According to research, as many as 99% of people who develop dissociative disorder due to their traumas at early age (before age 6), overpowering, and recurring of recognized personal histories. Other findings interpreted dissociation may also be possible, when there has been insistent neglect or emotional abuse. Additionally there is another scenario when parents are frightening and unpredictable then children could become dissociative. Around 1% of the population is affected by DID. Other symptoms of dissociative disorder comprises amnesia, headache, self-sabotage, self-persecution and violence. People with DID usually feel like they are passengers in their body rather than the driver. In short, they strongly believe they have no choice and they have to endure it. Persistent DID may lead other psychiatric illnesses i.e. depression, suicidal tendencies, sleep disorder, panic attacks, phobia, hallucination, eating disorder etc……………………………………………………………
Unfortunately, there is no permanent treatment available for this condition as it usually persists. But still healthcare professionals perform tests MRI, CT, PET/CT scans to rule out underlying physical causes for the individuals symptoms with DID such as brain tumors or head injuries. Research indicates that DID majorly show up in development stage (childhood) between 5 and 10. Usually DID may be confused with learning problems or behaviors which are quite common in children i.e. attention deficit hypersensitivity disorder (ADHD). This is the major reason DID not be diagnosed until adulthood……………………………..
Common treatment for the DID may include medications and talk therapy (psychotherapy). Though it may be difficult to treat dissociative disorders, many people learn different ways of coping and bring productive lives. It is important for us to keep awareness around us and keep self-safety and try to give support to such people who are dealing with this disorder.
Many thanks in advance for reading the whole blog…………
