Charles Bonnet syndrome

Hello guys! hope all are doing well. Today I am going to tell you about Charles Bonnet Syndrome. I think few of us are aware of this disease. But it is found common in people. Most of us ignore it or take it lightly. Kindly read the whole blog which will enhance understanding of the syndrome. If anyone in your family, friends etc is facing this issue. I request you all please make them understand and visit to opticians. Don't take this lightly.

Charles Bonnet Syndrome is a type of disease in which visual hallucinations occur caused by the brains adjustment, as a result of vision loss. This disease mostly occurs in elderly age who are more prevalent than any other age group to have such eye condition that slightly affects sight (such as age-related macular degeneration). In simple line, this syndrome causes a person whose vision starts to deteriorate to see things that are not realistic (hallucination.

Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is a quite common syndrome because it is estimated that about one person in every two with vision loss experiences. It is essential to be aware that hallucination is completely associated with Charles Bonnet Syndrome caused by failing eyesight.

Causes of Charles Bonnet Syndrome

CBS occurs after having visual impairment due to surgery complications i.e. macular degeneration, cataract, severe myopia, retinitis pigmentosa, optic neuritis, retinal vein occlusion and temporal arteritis. It will quite shocking for us to know that CBS is completely working as phantom limb pain. Phantom limb pain resembles still feeling pain in a limb that has been removed. As same people with CBS may have visual sensation instead of not being able to see.

Types of hallucination

There are two types of hallucination that people with CBS tend to experience i.e. simple repeated patterns and complex images of people, landscapes or objects. Simple repeated patterns may take the form of shapes, grids or lines, which can easily appear bright. While more complex hallucinations involve places, people, animals and insects.

Now the question arises “is hallucinations unpleasant or threatening?

No, it’s not unpleasant or threatening but it may be slightly frightening when experiences firstly.

Another question arises what effects can hallucination have?

Visual hallucination is the normal response where the brain has to the loss of vision. However, the least people are aware of Charles Bonnet syndrome widely. There are lots of people who worry about it what does it means and also have fear they may have developed a serious mental health issue or dementia. People with complex hallucinations can find it difficult to get ground. It can be unsettling. Vision may not frighten, but it can distribute to suddenly see strangers in their garden or home. This situation aggravates over time with episodes.

Diagnosis

There is no specific test for Charles Bonnet Syndrome. But doctors diagnose it by communicating to the person about their symptoms. In addition, he also takes a detailed medical history. In several cases, the doctor carries out tests to root out other possible causes of hallucination i.e. Alzheimer’s disease.

*Note- If a person's vision has loss and they are experiencing simple or complex hallucinations and does possess any sign of mental issue or dementia, they probably suffer from Charles Bonnet Syndrome.

Treatment

  • There is no specific medication to stop hallucinations caused by CBS.
  • But there are some things which could try by themselves to help relive their hallucinations when they experience i.e.
  • Change the lightening conditions to see if it disappears
  • Eye movements from left to right (every 15 seconds, repeat 4 or 5 times).
  • Talk to family, friends and GP, opticians (Don’t think it's a mental health issue, this activity brings relaxation.
  • There are various support groups (Esme's Umbrella, Macular Society etc.) that help such people to organize camps.

People with CBS needs support from family, friends and others to understand their situation instead of making them down in front of others. If you guys find such people, I request you all please talk to them warmly and make them believe that they are also an essential part of human life.

Stay happy! Stay warm in speaking!
