Do You know about TIS (Transient Ischemic Attack)?
I have seen such a patient in Delhi when I took my MMA for a checkup purpose. During that period, my father's friend was in charge. Thus, I got to know about TIS. Uncle gave me a brief description of the TIS and made me understand the difference between TIS and Stroke. You will get to know about it, kindly read the whole blog.
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIS) is generally known as a ministroke. It is a brief episode of
neurological dysfunction that is caused by loss of blood flow (ischemic) in the spinal cord, brain or retina, without any infarction (tissue
death). TIS have a similar mechanism as an ischemic
stroke because both are occurred by disruption in cerebral blood flow (CBF), or
blood flow to the brain. TIA is generally classified by the duration of neurological symptoms.
It is quite odd to
think out that sudden blockage of blood supply anywhere. As we
know, from head to toe, our blood delivers oxygen to each part of our
body, because it is essential to survive. If any case our blood flow gets
blocked anywhere then it ultimately brings big trouble. One major serious
effect of this situation is a transient ischemic attack (TIA for short).
When anyone of us has a TIA, then the flow of the blood to our part of the brain gets blocked for a short period. It is known as a ministroke, but take it serious mini (TIA) because it can be a sign that a full-blown stroke is on the way. Almost 1 in 3 people suffers from TIA and go on to have a stroke, often within a year.
However, TIA is short that will not cause major damage but still need to treat as an emergency. This stroke is part of FABRY Disease.
Causes of TIA
TIA happens because the blood clot gets stuck in an artery that is responsible
for supplying blood to the brain. In the absence of blood flow, a person brain
with TIA starves for oxygen and cannot work promptly like it does. Just because
of this they get symptoms like slurred speech or muscle weakness.
Clot refers to a build-up of a waxy or fatty substance known as plaque in
arteries. They can take shape anywhere in the body and float anywhere until
they get lodged somewhere. It is quite obvious if that somewhere happens to be
an artery that directly goes to the brain, we can have a TIA.
Difference between TIA vs Stroke
I know now the question arises
in your mind like how is a TIA different from the main stroke. I also had such a query when I was thinking about it. Let’s brief out--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The major difference is that TIAs occurs
only lasts a few minutes. The clot gets pushed along like a temporary
clog in the artery or in other words, the chemical in the body quickly breaks it down.
Thus, normal blood flow returns to the brain before any serious issue occurs.
Such symptoms may last up to 24 hours but they generally go around within an
hour.
On the other hand, strokes are do not go away too abruptly. There is
some part of the brain that goes without oxygen and longer than last which brings
more damage. While TIA comes on, goes away and does not leave any symptoms.
Stroke generally bring long-lasting effects and can be life-threatening.
Symptoms of Mini-Stroke
· ·
Trouble seeing in one or
both eyes
·
Difficult in walking
·
Trouble in speaking or understanding
·
Loss of balance or coordination
·
Dizziness and numbness or weakness, especially on one side of
the body
However, most of the symptoms of a TIA disappear
within an hour, although it may last up to 24 hours. TIA is often a warning
sign for future stroke, so, it is crucial to go to the hospital right away.
Taking medication like blood thinner can decline the risk of a stroke.
Diagnosis and Tests
Carotid Ultrasound Imaging and Magnetic Resonance Imaging are the tests that
are performed to check artery function, brain activity etc. Cardiac rhythm
monitoring is also performed to understand blood flow in the whole body. In
addition, these tests assist to capture blood clots, caused by ministroke takes place.
Treatment and Therapies
Antiplatelet medication This medication helps to stop stroke after the high
risk of TIA within 10 to 21 days. Medications are aspirin in combination with
extended-release clopidogrel.
In addition, anticoagulants, blood pressure control, cholesterol control
and diabetes control are also used to reduce the risk of stroke or death after
TIA.
TIA is highly prevalent for women who
·
Are pregnant, since pregnancy can raise their blood pressure,
and make their heart work harder.
·
Take birth control pills, especially if they smoke or have
high blood pressure
·
Use hormone replacement therapy to diagnose menopause symptoms.
Prevention of TIAs
To prevent TIAs, it is essential to bring fewer changes in our lifestyle such as
- Numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body
- Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Difficult in walking
- Trouble in speaking or understanding
- Loss of balance or coordination
- Dizziness
Such small changes help to reduce the risk of TIAs.
Guys, I requested to all of you lease take of your health and bring several
changes in our lifestyle to live healthy long-lasting.
Stay Happy! Stay Long Live
Best Wishes for the future!
