Nutrition is all about having a healthy and balanced diet. Food and drinks help to be active and energetic while nutrients require to be healthy. Nutrition’s are crucial for pregnant women because it promotes healthy pregnancy outcomes. In this short article, we discussed what is the role of nutrients in pregnant ladies.             Nutrition for pregnant women has become a discussion topic for everyone. The reason behind is that, from past few decades, pregnant women are facing lots of issue during delivery. Poor nutrition in women’s does not only impact their health and infants but also contributes to poor maternal and infant outcomes. Now day’s health professionals in the gynaecologist sector are putting more effort to create awareness in pregnant women and their families about nutrition. Each pregnant woman should take approx. 300 extra calories each day for maintaining a healthy pregnancy. These calories can generate from a balanced diet of fruit, whole grains, vegetables and protein. Sweets and fats can be the source of the high amount of calory? These sources do not play an immense role in calory supplements. So, these amounts must be kept minimum.  Eat a nutritious diet in pregnancy is directly linked up with good brain development and healthy birth weight. It also assists in reducing the risk of an ample number of birth defects. An ideal balance diet helps in reducing the risk of anaemia as well as other, unlike pregnancy symptoms i.e. fatigue and morning sickness. However, there is a different scale of nutrition for pregnant women during their pregnancy such as:

First trimester (first 12 weeks)- The number of pregnant women does not require any extra calories.

·       Second trimester (13 to 26 weeks)- At this period, approx. 340 extra calories have a huge requirement in most women each day.

·       Last trimester (after 26 weeks): Around 450 extra calories are required by women in a day at this period.

·       This scale is sated by Health Care Professionals (HCP) for pregnant women.





Core tenets of nutrition for pregnant women

ΓΌ    Key nutrients for a healthy pregnancy are calcium, iron, vitamin A, C, D, B6, B12 and folate (folic acid). Functions of each key nutrient in a healthy pregnancy i.e.

·      Calcium: it helps to build strong teeth and bones. The main sources of calcium are milk, yoghurt, cheese etc. A pregnant woman needs 1000 mg daily basis during pregnancy.

·     Iron: Assist red blood cells to deliver oxygen to the fetus. While sources are dried beans, peas, lean red meat and iron-fortified cereals. Each pregnant woman needs 27 mg on regular basis.

·   Vitamin D: It is important for the body because it helps in absorbing calcium to build bones and teeth. Sources are sunlight, fatty fish, fortified milk. A pregnant woman needs around 600 international units (IUs) each day. 

ΓΌ   Weight gain during pregnancy is very important for pregnant women until they give birth to the baby. But, gaining too much weight or too little weight can create issues during pregnancy for mother and baby. If a woman has a healthy weight, before pregnancy then she doesn’t need to have twice and thrice the time. Such women’s need to have an average of about 300 extra calories in a day. 


Key aspects to take care of pregnant women

·       Pregnant women must take a prenatal vitamin (i.e. folic acid etc.).

·       Exercise regularly

·       Track weight gain

·       Take a healthy food

·       Go to prenatal care checkups

·       Don’t drink and smoke

·       Drink plenty of fluids

During pregnancy, there are lots of thoughts which comes in a pregnant woman which creates stress level in them. For example, it is a new experience for them so they always worry about their physic, baby i.e. changes in the face. losing the baby, a baby will be deformed and going into preterm labour. So, they do not need to worry about these things. How much will they relax then their baby will be happier. Everyone says that when a mother smiles then her fetus is also smiling. So there is no means to worry.
